Lifeboats

ROYAL NATIONAL LIFEBOAT
INSTITUTION

In August 2011, Charlotte Lowe and her family sadly lost the life of one of their young family members while on holiday together in Devon. As this sudden and tragic situation unfolded RNLI lifeguards did everything they could in a desperate attempt to save their life as they waiting for the air ambulance to arrive. Unfortunately, on this occasion it was out of their hands. He had suffered a sudden and fatal heart failure, leaving his family there and then upon the beach.

In the week leading up to this devastating Charlotte and her family had returned to a destination that their family had been visiting for four generations. They reminisced about the memories they shared there and were encouraged by wishes to return from the young family member and his brother. And so they returned to the beach they were all so fond of. There the had said he had 'the best holiday ever'. Determined to cherish each moment and never let that special place fade away they have continued to visit every year since the tragedy. Each time they remember their lost loved one, celebrate memories they have all shared and create and many more unforgettable moments.

In his memory and for all the wonderful memories they have shared, Charlotte Lowe has been supporting the RNLI; the charity that saves live at sea, by donating to the charity. Her Little Silver Shell Shells collection  is made from real shells collected as mementos from the beach when Charlotte was a child. For each shell sold Charlotte Lowe makes a donation to the RNLI.

Despite this Charlotte's sad story the RNLI save 100's of lives every year and have recently reached a milestone in their lifesaving history, saving 140,000 since 1824. The RNLI is a non-profit organisation  that provides, a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service and a seasonal lifeguard service. With out the help of their lifeguards and volunteers that dedicate their time on lifeboats, at lifeboat stations, on beaches and as community fundraisers, in RNLI shops, education presenters in schools, at events, sea safety officers in coastal communities, museums and across our offices without volunteers they wouldn't be able to save lives at sea.

BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION

In 2012, Charlotte's young cousin and grandfather both received live saving heart operations that will hopefully greatly increase their lives. These operations were carried out to prevent and remove an aneurysm; a bulge in a blood vessel caused by a weakness in the blood vessel wall. As blood passes through the weakened blood vessel, the blood pressure causes a small area to bulge outwards like a balloon. Aneurysms can develop in any blood vessel anywhere in the body, but the two most common places for them to form are in the abdominal aorta (the artery that transports blood away from the heart to the rest of the body) and the brain. Common in later life, both her grandfathers have received surgery on their hearts during their 70's in order to prolong their lives. Her cousin receiving surgery a year after the tragic loss of his brother, where 20 cm of artery were replaced inside his heart to prevent the artery from bulging.

Without years of cutting edge research these operations would not have be possible. The British Heart Foundation are the UK's number one heart charity their pioneering research has helped to transform the lives of people living with heart and circulatory conditions since 1961.Coronary heart disease is the UK's single biggest killer but they are leading the fight against it.

Charlotte Lowe's Hearts of Gold collection and heart additions from Love & Romance are supporting the British Heart Foundation. For each heart sold, a donation is made to the charity.
